چکیده

We present IGaze, a semi-immersive human-avatar interaction system. Using head tracking and an illusionistic 3D effect we let users interact with a talking avatar in an application interview scenario. The avatar features reactive gaze behavior that adapts to the user position according to exchangeable gaze strategies. In user studies we showed that two gaze strategies successfully convey the intended impression of dominance/submission and that the 3D effect was positively received. We argue that IGaze is a suitable setup for exploring reactive nonverbal behavior synthesis in human-avatar interactions.

A Multimodal Real-Time Platform for Studying Human-Avatar Interactions

A better understanding of the human user’s expectations and sensitivities to the real-time behavior generated by virtual agents can provide insightful empirical data and infer useful principles to guide the design of intelligent virtual agents. In light of this, we propose and implement a research framework to systematically study and evaluate different important aspects of multimodal real-time...

Simulation versus Reproduction for Avatar Eye-Gaze in Immersive Collaborative Virtual Environments

Using video technology in telecommunication systems poses spatial orientation problems because participants have a window onto each other’s space, rather than sharing one space. These problems can be overcome using immersive virtual reality in which remote participants are represented as avatars. Because of the challenges involved in capturing eyegaze reliably and problems of loss in transmissi...

Does Brief Exposure to a Self-avatar Affect Common Human Behaviors in Immersive Virtual Environments?

A plausible assumption is that self-avatars increase the realism of immersive virtual environments (VEs), because self-avatars provide the user with a visual representation of his/her own body. Consequently having a self-avatar might lead to more realistic human behavior in VEs. To test this hypothesis we compared human behavior in VE with and without providing knowledge about a self-avatar wit...

An Operational Model of Joint Attention - Timing of Gaze Patterns in Interactions between Humans and a Virtual Human

Joint attention has been identified as a foundational skill in human-human interaction. If virtual humans are to engage in joint attention, they have to meet the expectations of their human interaction partner and provide interactional signals in a natural way. This requires operational models of joint attention with precise information on natural gaze timing. We substantiate our model of the j...
